      Which cabinet for which substance?

Flammables, acids and alkalis, toxics and pesticides — what can be stored together and what can't.

      COSHH

      Which cabinet for which substance?

Keep substances apart by hazard class and store each class in a cabinet made for it.

      • Flammable liquids (solvents, fuels, paints, thinners): a flammable liquids cabinet, away from sources of ignition — DSEAR applies to these.
      • Acids and alkalis (corrosives): a cabinet built to resist corrosion, with acids and alkalis kept apart.
      • Toxic substances, pesticides and agrochemicals: a lockable cabinet for that class.
      • Oxidising agents: never stored with flammables.

Section 7 (handling and storage) and section 10 (stability and reactivity) of each safety data sheet say what a substance must not be stored with. Check the specification on the product page against your substances before you order.

      Oil storage

      The 110% bunding rule, explained

UK pollution-prevention guidance for bunding, based on the oil storage regulations, sets secondary containment at 110% of the largest container, or 25% of the total volume stored — whichever is greater. It is widely used for chemicals as well as oils. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own regulations, so check which apply to your site.

      • 1 × 205 L drum → at least 225.5 L
      • 4 × 205 L drums → at least 225.5 L (110% of one drum is more than 25% of 820 L)
      • 8 × 205 L drums → at least 410 L (25% of 1,640 L)
      • 1 × 1,000 L IBC → at least 1,100 L

The bund size calculator at the top of this page works this out and lists spill pallets that meet it.

      Oil, chemical or maintenance kit?

Match absorbent type and kit size to the liquids and volumes on your site.

      Spill response

      Oil, chemical or maintenance kit?

      • Oil kits absorb hydrocarbons such as fuel and oil but repel water — suited to outdoor areas, yards and wet ground.
      • Chemical kits are for aggressive liquids such as acids and alkalis.
      • Maintenance (general purpose) kits take oils, coolants and water-based liquids — suited to workshops and plant rooms.

Size the kit to the largest spill you could realistically have — usually the biggest container in that area — using the absorbency in litres listed on each kit.
